A man protesting the revocation of the Amarnath land transfer order committed suicide on Wednesday. Kuldeep Kumar Dogra fell unconscious as he was speaking at the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti’s hunger strike and dharna venue. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Samiti members alleged he might have consumed poison while SDPO, Jammu West, Mohan Lal Kaith, said a suicide note “containing information on his resentment of the Amarnath imbroglio” was recovered.

An eyewitness said that Dogra, in his speech, “denounced the state administration for the bedlam created over the Amranath land transfer and the government’s failure to recall Governor NN Vohra back to the Centre, presenting his highly emotional views in poetic style before falling unconscious”.

The Samiti members took the body from the hospital to the dharna site, where they shouted slogans and burnt tyres around the area. The body was later shifted to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

As the news spread, saffron activists slogans took to the streets, pelting stones, shouting slogans and damaging vehicles.
