Closely associated with late Sanjay Gandhi, she was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1976 and was made All India Mahila Congress President in 1998.

She has been General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee 1999 onwards and has been a member of several parliamentary and ministerial consulatative committees.
