When Andre Nel signed a contract to play county cricket for Northamptonshire this summer, he was nevertheless hoping that he might not be able to fulfil all of it.
So it proved when he was named in the South African squad for the NatWest Series, his first chance to play one-day international cricket for a year and a half.
Hit the headlines at home in 2001 when he struck Allan Donald with a bouncer, and was chosen for a tour to West Indies.
Nel made his one-day debut in the Caribbean, taking 3-20 in his first game, and had figures of 4-53 in his debut Test against Zimbabwe later that year.
Has yet to fulfil that early promise and was sent home from the South Africa A team tour to Australia earlier this year for drink driving, which was not his first brush with authority.
