Archaic idea
Advancement in communication technology and education has firmly united India. The common man no longer cares about caste, religion, race, state or language.
Advancement in communication technology and education has firmly united India. The common man no longer cares about caste, religion, race, state or language. Even in rural areas, the increasing influence of education and media is rapidly changing things. Has anybody ever heard of a communal riot in a distant village? No, because villagers coexist peacefully. As such, the idea of reservation for any caste or class is irrelevant. The government should set up a non-political committee to suggest a way to do away with reservation.

Patronising criminals
The actions of Samajwadi Party workers who damaged private property in Uttar Pradesh in protest against an income tax notice to Amitabh Bachchan is deplorable. So is the fact that the police merely looked on. The Mulayam Singh government has always patronised law-breakers, as is evident from his support for Amarmani Tripathi, the accused in the Madhumita Shukla murder case. The Supreme Court should step in to ensure action against the law-breakers.

No policy change
This has reference to A.G. Noorani’s article Slow and unsteady (June 13). Since Pakistan’s independence, its army has held sway over the body politic of the State. Due to its vested interests, the army’s priority has been the settlement of the Kashmir issue at the cost of economic and cultural relations with India. We can’t expect a change in the situation unless a democratically elected government takes over in Pakistan.

Nuclear genius
Apropos of the editorial Plane tales from the Rashtrapati (June 12), as the supreme commander of the armed forces, the President can fly in a fighter aircraft, subject to medical fitness. But describing the ‘Father of Indian Missiles’, who is a top scientist, as a mere ‘nuclear techie-manager’ doesn’t do justice to his contribution to the nation.
