Army chopper crashes, pilot killed

One senior Army officer was killed and another was injured in a helicopter crash in village Kargana nearly five km away from Barielly, reports M Hasan.

One senior Army officer was killed and another was injured in a helicopter crash in village Kargana nearly five km away from Barielly on Wednesday.

The helicopter had taken off from Barielly cantonment on routine sorties with two persons on board. While Lt Bhatia was killed in the crash, Major KD Singh was pulled out of the wreckage in a serious condition. He had been rushed to the hospital. The reason of the crash was not known.

The IG (zone) Barielly Javeed Ahmad told Hindustan Times over phone that the helicopter was of “observation wing” of the army. The helicopter crashed into subsidiary of Ramganga canal. Javeed Ahmad who rushed to the spot said that crash was around 12 noon. The crash in water was close to the village Kargana.

Ahmad said that two persons-homeguard Rishipal and Nanhe- who were working on their nearby fields rushed to the site to rescue the trapped officers. Immediately other villagers also came to launch rescue operation.

However when contacted Lucknow central command for comments the Public Relation officer Dr (Mrs) K Sagar said “we have instructions not to speak to media about the crash”.
