Residents of Marhama village in Kupwara said they caught hold of a jawan on hearing an alarm raised by the victim on Saturday evening, when the accused forced his entry into a residential house near an army camp and raped an inmate.

The trooper, identified as Showkat Ahmad Malik, has been arrested and an FIR registered under Section 458, 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).

A police officer said on the condition of anonymity that the woman was sent for a medical examination.

The incident sparked protests on Sunday. The police are keeping an eye to ensure that the situation does not snowball.

The incident has once again put focus on Army's TA wing, where locals are trained for a few months and incorporated in counter-insurgency operations. The Army has not come up with any clarification so far.
