In a press release the BWA general secretary, Dr PK Roy, alleged that owing to this delay, an incident took place, in which idol of Goddess Durga of ‘South Malaka Barwari’ met with several fractures, when it slipped out of the truck and fell down on the road while approaching the Saraswati Ghat at Yamuna.
But, somehow members of the Barwari escaped unhurt, since they all were waiting at the downloading point. Later, the broken idol pieces were collected from the road and immersed in the river.
He said the immersion activity got a jolt when the Army jawans did not allow the ladies to come out with their trucks from exit gate, which were being taken to carry the women and deities. Lots of hardship was faced by the fair sex, as well as senior citizens who had to take a long stroll to reach the main road.
However, in this melee, the Bengali Welfare Association managed to hold their traditional ‘Durga Puja Award’ felicitation function, ‘Vijaya Utsav’, at the Saraswati Ghat.
The function, which was graced by MP Rewati Raman Singh and others, was also delayed due to the absence of different Puja committee members who were stuck in long queues, right from Bairahna crossing to the site of immersion.
At the function, the BWA felicitated Rajeev Bose for his courageous Press photography, with an award in memory of Nipendra Nath Mukherjee while Surojit Banerjee was conferred with Bobby Sinha Award for his contribution in the field of Agamani. The BWA also awarded a certificate with memento to Rumpi Bose for her contribution in the field of art, despite her physical disability.
In the Durga Puja section, the BWA felicitated the Lukerganj Barwari, with their most prestigious ‘Viewers’ Award’. South Malaka Barwari was able to retain the winner’s position for two consecutive years in a row.
