EDUCATION DEPARTMENT employees and the teachers’ association are on a collision course with the Uttar Pradesh Intermediate Teachers’ Association (Sharma group) over the incident in which joint director Education Amar Nath Verma had been manhandled. Adopting a confrontationist posture on the issue, MLC Panchanan Rai and Dr YD Singh participated in a dharna of the teachers at the district magistrate office and made a bid to court arrest. Showing solidarity with the joint director, Rai said the entire teachers’ community would launch a movement if no action was taken against the erring teachers.

Earlier, Verma lodged an FIR against district unit president and secretary of the teachers’ group Markandey Singh and Umesh Nayak for assaulting him.

Though Panchanan Rai said teachers were in no mood for confrontation, they warned the district officials that they could hit the streets if no action was taken against the teachers who roughed up the Education department official.

Meanwhile, working in the Education department office remained suspended for the second consecutive day as the employees boycotted the work and demanded for the arrest of the accused. They were in no mood to compromise on the issue and said the Education department officials would not give in to pressure mounted by the teachers’ leaders.

Basis education department employees, along with employees of the District Institute of Educational Training (DIET) and District Inspector of Schools office have also extended support to the strike. DIOS Ramagya Kumar, Basic Shiksha Adhikari Sanjeev Singh and others said teachers, who are supposed to be beacons of moral values and right conduct, were behaving like student leaders.

They said teachers should introspect and see their own deeds before making allegations of corruption against the Education department.

The employees said they would continue their strike till the teachers accused were arrested.

They even said if that the district administration made any attempt to shield the teachers’ body leaders, they would give a call for closure of all educational institutions and hit the street.

Amidst all this, teachers’ community leaders demanded transfer of the joint director and DIOS.
