At least 13 dead in Pak road mishap

india Updated: Aug 08, 2006 18:24 IST

At least 13 people were killed on Tuesday when a van skidded off a road damaged by monsoon rains and plunged into a ravine in northern Pakistan, said news reports.

All passengers on board were killed as the van was travelling towards Swat city from Shangla town in North-Western Frontier Province (NWFP), local police officials told the private Geo television channel.

Weeks of heavy monsoon rains have killed over 200 people in Pakistan, most of them in NWFP and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, which were both also hit in October by a magnitude-7.6 earthquake, which killed an estimated 75,000 people.

Many rivers in northern Pakistan that are tributaries of the Indus River are currently flooded.
