ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY (AU) students forcibly entered the committee room at AU Vice-Chancellor Prof RG Harshe's office and staged a gherao on Monday demanding a meeting with the VC against alleged leakage of question papers during the Post-Graduate Admission Test (PGAT) -2006.
The students lifted the gherao after the Proctor Prof Jatashankar Tripathi fixed a meeting of the students with the VC on Tuesday.
A large number of students and student leaders demanding cancellation of the entire PGAT and re-examination, gheraoed the VC's office under the leadership of AU student union president Ajit Kumar Yadav. The students charged the AU administration with covering up the irregularities during the PGAT -06 and shouted slogans against the varsity administration.
The students forcibly entered the committee room at VC's office after the VC failed to fulfil their demands. Several senior teachers tried to control the situation but all in vain. The student leaders engaged in heated arguments with the teachers and remained stuck to their demand of meeting the VC.
The student leaders demanded cancellation of the entire PGAT -06 and reconduct of the admission test. The gherao came to an end after Prof Tripathi fixed a meeting with the VC through telephonic conversation. The meeting has been scheduled to be held at 3 pm on Tuesday.
Addressing the protesting students AUU chief Yadav said that the AU administration has failed to maintain the sanctity of the PGAT -06 and engaged in hushing up the matter.
He said that despite presenting the proof of leakage of question paper to the authorities, they remained mum and instead charged the student leaders with creating disturbances during the examinations.
He questioned the ability of the VC under whose administration such confidential document like question paper went out of the office. He said that the students have no faith in the committee formed by the VC to investigate the matter as no action has been taken in the leakage of political science question paper. The committee has cancelled only the Hindi test.
Prof Tripathi assured the students that the matter has been forwarded to the police and investigation is being carried out regarding the leakage of question paper during PGAT-06.
A large number of policemen and officers from different police stations were deployed on the AU campus to check any untoward incident.
