He was addressing a gathering of around 400 students demanding students union election at DSW office on Monday.

Prof Harshe said that he would ensure holding of elections only after the framing of the new regulations and ordinances in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. He said that he greatly valued democratic process but would announce the elections only when the varsity was ready with the new guidelines.

It is worth mentioning that a section of student leaders are on fast-unto-death demanding immediate elections of the students' union. On Monday, a large number of students reached the varsity administrative office and forcibly closed the counters. They shouted slogans and demanded immediate declaration of election dates.
