The 28-year-old woman's husband was not around when the student, Sharan Gouda, attempted to rape her on Saturday night at a beach cottage in Gokarna, DIG (Western Range), Gopal B Hosur said.

The woman raised an alarm and staff at the cottage caught Sharan and handed him over to police, he said.

Sharan Gouda, who hails from Raichur and is studying in an engineering college in Bangalore, was today remanded to judicial custody till March 23 by a court in Karwar, he added.
