Fazlur Rehman alias Fazlu, who finally landed in police dragnet on Sunday, was brought into the world of crime by jailed don Om Prakash Srivastava alias Babloo Srivastava in early 90s.

In 1999, Fazlu got into the big league by orchestrating the kidnapping of a Delhi-based businessman Sanjay Gupta from Bandhan guesthouse at Indira Nagar in Lucknow. He then laid his hand on a paan masala factory owner Praveen Gupta in Kanpur. Both were released after paying ransom.

Fazlu first came into Babloo’s contact in Delhi when the latter was staying at Chandraswami’s place. As Babloo left for Dubai to join the D-company, Fazlu too shifted his base there.

Later, when Babloo fled from Dubai following a rift with Dawood after 1993 blasts in Mumbai, he made Irfan Goga incharge of his kidnapping and hawala trade.

Babloo’s other associates Fazlu and Sanjay Khanna alias Chunky were asked to follow Goga’s diktats.

Fazlu and Chunky later developed differences with Goga and tipped-off Dawood’s brother Anees about Goga working for Babloo. A few months later, Goga’s bullet-ridden body was recovered from a beach in Dubai. The Dubai police had then detained Anees and 20 others in connection with the murder.

After Goga’s fall, Fazlu and Chunky shifted base to Malaysia from where they started orchestrating big kidnappings in various parts of India. Though Fazlu’s men kidnapped businessmen in Bihar, UP and Kolkata, majority of the kidnappings took place in Delhi.

Senior officials in UP Police also revealed that Fazlu had come into contact of Abu Salem after he separated from Babloo. His expertise in hawala transactions made the two come together. He was also close to Aftab Ansari, main accused in the sensational attack on American Centre in Kolkata.

Operating from Dubai, Malaysia and Singapore, Fazlu also spent some time in Africa. This was the period when D-company, Nana company, as the gang of  Chhota Rajan was called, and Babloo were fighting with one another.

As the big players in the world of crime were busy settling scores with one another, Fazlu increased his strength and began to run his own gang.

For six years Fazlu, Chinky Khanna, Vikram Wahi, Manjeet Singh Mangey, Poonam Bhagat, actress turned criminal, Archana Sharma (seen in a Dev Anand flick), Ravinder Pant were involved several kidnappings.

Be it Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Fazlu played his role with perfection and came on a sound footing after Khanna was murdered with Poonam. He was then entrusted to oversee the operations and recruit new boys: Shri Prakash Shukla was one of them.

In Nepal, where he married a woman called Rani after a long courtship, the don had a fine network. He aligned with Sahil — the son-in-law of slain Mirza Dilshad Beg and his successor and Salim Ansari, a D-company criminal.
