The bombardment began just moments after air raid sirens sounded in the city at 8:05 pm (1705 GMT).

Anti-aircraft fire has since become sporadic, according to the correspondent.

Separately, a correspondent of Al-Jazeera television reported from Mosul, that the northern Iraqi city was also being subjected to bombing.
