More than 6000 athletes are expected to take part in 24 disciplines in the Games, which will serve as a qualifying event for the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune in October.

IOA Secretary General Randhir Singh said the event could be rescheduled if it coincides with the Karnataka state assembly elections.

"As of now, the schedule is that the National Youth Games will be held in May. If state assembly elections are held at that time, we have to reschedule it," he said.

The disciplines for the under-18 event are archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing (boys), cycling, equestrian, football, fencing, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, tennis, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling (boys).

All athletes born on or after January 1, 1990 are eligible to take part in the event.
