There’s no denying that Muslim sensibilities have been hurt by recent events especially the cartoon controversy, it is important that Muslims must be alerted to the facile way in which politicians may exploit them, in a manner similar to the way they did after the Babri masjid demolition.
But the Muslim community mustn’t demean its agony by announcing rewards to punish the perpetrators. Don’t let others exploit our hurt emotions.
Vir Sanghvi in Against the current (March 9) says Muslims should show more courage and tackle extremist Muslim leaders like the UP minister, Yaqoob Qureshi, who gave the call for the head of the Danish cartoonist. But why are Muslims asked to condemn the loonies within? Why don’t you ask the average Hindu to condemn the fanatics who mouth anti-Muslim statements regularly? Should we say that the average Hindu condones the Gujarat riots? It is everyone’s duty to tackle fanatics in every community.
The current brand of politics is destroying the unity and integrity of India. Vir Sanghvi’s analysis should be heeded seriously by political parties who should mend their ways.
This is with reference to the report Advani hopes yatra will do the trick (March 10). In the present scenario of a communally-charged atmosphere in UP and many other states, it would be preferable if so-called ‘leader’ L.K. Advani were to plead for communal harmony instead of trying to derive a political mileage. He should have emphasised a ‘nafrat chhodo’ sermon rather than his ‘Bharat jodo yatra’.
Blessed with daughters
Hasan Khurshid in Quran bans killing girls (March 8) is wrong while describing Prophet Muhammad having only one daughter, Fatima. He was blessed with four daughters and three sons. Hope this will clarify the misunderstanding.
