Biased report

In the report Corridors of Power (July 3), the writer mentions that Navin Kumar is known for his proximity to me and Ravi Shankar Prasad. The report also refers to “the powerful Kayastha lobby” and seeks to create the impression that Navin Kumar has been given temporary charge of the post of CEO, Prasar Bharti because of his caste and proximity to me.

Like a large number of officers presently in service, including the present Cabinet Secretary, Navin Kumar has also worked with me. I am sure this is not the reason for his present appointment. The fact that he worked with me need not go in his favour, just as it need not go against him. The report is tendentious.

True democracy

The ICS was created as an elite service to rule over the people. Its successor IAS is totally inconsistent with democracy. Even Britain does not have such a service. In the US, the mayor selects local professionals such as land officers, police chiefs and city judges, whose appointment is approved by a committee of the city council. The mayor can’t remove any of them without this committee’s approval. They thus become independent functionaries accountable to the people. This is how good democracies function.

Well done!

Kudos to the Indian team for winning the cricket Test series against the West Indies 1-0. Rahul Dravid has led from the front at a time when the team needed him most. Brian Lara’s dismal record against the Indians continues. It’s high time he retire.

False allegations

It’s disturbing to see that Gohar Ayub’s outrageous accusation that Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw may have passed on war plans to Pakistan are being given so much publicity. Maneckshaw dealt a crushing blow to Pakistan and played a major role in the liberation of Bangladesh. Indians must protest to the highest authorities in Pakistan for defaming a legend of military history.
