Bird flu: Gujarat Govt to cull 55,000 chickens

The state government has also prevented the inflow of poultry items into Gujarat till the situation is clear.

The Gujarat government has said that over 55,000 chickens will be culled as a preventive measure against the dreaded bird flu.

"Fifty thousand chicken will be culled today. This would be done at poultries that fall at a distance of three kilometres from the neighbouring town of Nandurbar in Maharashtra," Minister for Cow Breeding and Protection Purshottam Solanki said on Sunday.

Solanki said that this was being done as per the guidelines given by the Centre.

The minister added that process to vaccinate all poultry chicken that fall within 4-10 km of Nandurbar was also being carried out.

Solanki said that the Govenrment has set up four control centres at Uchal, Surat, Vadodara and Gandhinagar and a senior official has been sent to Mumbai to study the methods employed to tackle the disease.
