The proportion of girls to the total number of examinees has actually declined by two per cent from 41.46 in 2004-5 to 39.4 this year.

Last year, 88,618 students appeared in high school and intermediate board examinations in the district. The number of girls was 36,721. In 2005-06, 1,05, 186 students will appear in the examination. The number of girls is 41,486.

Last year, 22,646 girls appeared in the high school examination. In the intermediate examination, 12,796 girls appeared as regular students. This year, 25,465 girls will appear in the high school examination and 14,827 in the intermediate examination.

Though the number of girl student in board examinations has increased, this has not been in proportion to the boys.

The State Government has launched various schemes to promote girls’ education, but these are not producing results.

Awarding Rs 20,000 to girls after Intermediate examination under Kanya Vidya Dhan Scheme and distribution of free uniforms failed to have the desired effect.

The board examination will begin on March 4 at 160 examinations centres in the district. The district administration has decided to carry out videography at sensitive centres in the district.
