A woman drowned and four persons were missing after a boat carrying 16 people capsized in the Narmada river at Omkareshwar near Khandwa on Sunday, officials said.

Local divers rescued 11 people and fished out the body of Shakuntala Bai (45) after the boat capsized at Nagar Ghat in the temple town on Sunday afternoon, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Prakash Vyas told on the phone.

Efforts were on to trace the missing persons, identified as Rajendra, Murari, Surendra Rai and Shivhari, he said. Senior civil and police officials rushed to the spot with a medical team.

The people were pilgrims from Mumbai and had hired a private boat to reach the Omkareshwar Temple, Vyas said.
