THE STAGE is set for the 17th international literary festival by the Hindi-Urdu Sahitya Award Committee from June 10.

What makes this year’s three-day fest unique is that apart from top poets in Hindi and Urdu, the Hindi Urdu Sahitya Award Committee is also bringing noted lyricist Gulzar, actor Shabana Azmi and Farooque Sheikh to the city for what promises to be a intellectual treat of a rare kind.

When contacted on phone in Mumbai, Gulzar said that he was eagerly looking forward to his forthcoming Lucknow visit. “Meri zubaan main Lucknow ka asar hai, uski yaadein meri shayari mein aaj bhi taaza hain,” he told HT Lucknow Live adding that his entire work is a tribute to Lucknow, its culture and traditions.

“The kind of gathering that the Hindi Urdu Sahitya Award Committee is organising this year provides me another opportunity to renew my age-old ties with the city,” he said. This year’s literary fest is devoted to famous Hindi write Ram Kumar Verma and legendary Urdu poet and film lyricist Kaifi Azmi. Syed Sibte Razi, Jharkhand Governor and Dr AR Kidwai, Haryana Governor who would also be present on the occasion would felicitate eminent Hindi-Urdu poets.

Says Athar Nabi, secretary of the host Committee, “The Hindi-Urdu Sahitya Award Committee is the only such organization that provides a platform to Hindi and Urdu poets, intellectuals and litterateurs to share their literary treasure.

This also promotes linguistic harmony as every year the life and contributions of one Hindi and Urdu litterateur is discussed at the fest.”

Nabi said that poets like Gopal Das Neeraj, Gulzar, Waseem Barelvi, Nida Fazli, Rahat Indauri, Som Thakur, Kumar Vishwas besides some others from across the globe like Ashoor Kazmi (UK), Fahmida Jahib and Javed Danish (Canada), Jameeluddin Ali (Pakistan) and Nayyar Jahan (USA) are expected to get together for the kavi-sammelan/mushaira that would also be held as part of the literary fest. The inaugural session would be held at the Ganna Sansthan auditorium on the evening of June 10 while the academic sessions of the seminar on Kaifi Azmi would be held the next day at Gemini Continental. The last day would be reserved for Hindi litterateur Dr Ram Kumar Verma at the Rai Uma Nath Bali auditorium which would be followed by a play, ‘Man mast hua, tab kya bole.’

Nabi added, “intellectuals, writers, poets, litterateurs have an important role to play in shaping the opinion of the society. Our literary fest is organized with this aim in mind.”
