A large breach appeared in the earthen embankment of Sasan irrigation canal here following release of water from the Hirakud dam, official sources said on Friday.
Water gushed out washing away the embankment but it did not cause any damage to life or property as there was no habitation nearby, they said.
The breach, measuring 20 metre by 60 metre, occurred yesterday in a patch in the left bank of the embankment at Sagunpali which was being renovated.
Release of water into the canal was stopped after the incident, the sources said.
However, farmers of 94 villages would be affected by the breach as they cultivated 22,000 hectares of land irrigated by the canal.
Farmers alleged that though the authorities said that only 50 cusecs of water had been released, in effect the discharge was much more. Now it will take more than ten days to repair the breach, they said.
The renovation work of the damaged portion, a package of Rs 35.56 lakh, had began in December last.
