UK police are keen to work in tandem with their Indian counterparts in tackling crime effectively.

"The changing world order is a challenge for police all over the world and we cannot just remain focused on our areas of operation alone and need to look beyond our own borders for effective results," Matthew Jukes, chief detective inspector of South Yorkshire Police said.

Jukes was in Guwahati along with another colleague, Bobby Dev, to assist and support a NRI woman looking for information about her father abducted by gunmen in southern Assam in March.

"It is always nice and helpful to share expertise in dealing with crimes or anything related to terrorism," the British police officer said.

"The police in both India and Britain have different approach to tackling their problems. But it is becoming increasingly necessary to share information and tactics for better results."

India and Britain have for long been sharing intelligence in cracking trans-national crimes with police officials from both countries visiting each other on regular exchange programmes.

"We need to encourage more exchange programmes so that there is better understanding of the communities and the varied nature of crimes and other such problems," Dev said.

The South Yorkshire police have deputed Dev in a special cell called the Indo-UK Police Relationship for enhancing ties between the two police forces.

"Considering the large Indian population staying in our country, it is all the more necessary for good and close ties with the Indian Police," Jukes said.

"We have a very good and cordial relationship with the Indian Police and are keen to boost the ties."
