A BSF jawan was killed and six others injured when militants exploded two grenades within a span of 15 minutes in Sopore township of Baramulla district today, official sources said.

The grenade exploded with a big bang causing splinter injuries to seven personnel. One of the jawans identified as constable J Raj Juneja of 133rd battalion succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital.

The condition of three more injured personnel was stated to be serious and were referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment, the sources said.

Three others were admitted to Baramulla sub-district hospital where their condition was stated to be stable.

Fifteen minutes after the first explosion, the sources said militants struck a nearby security post outside a defunct cinema hall with a grenade.

However, the device failed to hit the target and exploded on the roadside causing no harm.

This was the second major strike by militants in as many days. Nine soldiers and a woman were injured when militants set off an explosive-laden car at Rawalpora bypass on the weekend targeting an army convoy passing through the area.
