The suicide attack occurred near a bus station.

"A suicide bomber drove his explosive-laden vehicle into a crowd of civilian vehicles near the station parking lot where buses line up to pick up passengers," the official said.

He said the bus station was close to several government buildings and the road where the blast took place was often used by the multinational troops in the province, some 110 km south of Baghdad.

Karbala is home to two of the holiest Shia shrines and has seen sectarian and insurgent violence in the past.
