Addressing party workers rally in Chandauli district, Gehlot said that people of Uttar Pradesh yearn for the return of Congress rule as it would mean business for them. “This has been witnessed during previous regimes of the party,” he said.

He said emergence of regional parties contributed immensely in dividing the societies on caste lines and vowed his party's resolve to strengthen the Congress in the State before the Assembly elections due in early next year.

Taking a dig at the Mulayam Singh government, Gehlot said, the government encouraged crime due to its soft approach towards criminals and mafias and the common public had become a victim of this mafia-friendly government.

"Congress government means all around development", he said.

Not a single MW of power was generated by the non-Congress governments in Uttar Pradesh where as the same was not the case with Congress government.

Speaking on the occasion, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committe chief Salman Khursheed gave a call to the people of Chandauli to give their mandate in favour of Congress in the forthcoming assembly elections if they wanted overall development of the State.

He said All India Congress Committee chief Sonia Gandhi during her last meeting with the local leaders had stressed the need for overhauling of the Congress cadre so that they prepared for the upcoming elections and ensured Congress party's victory at the hustings.
