Being organised jointly by the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and Paschim Banga Vigyan Mancha, the celebrations were kicked off on Friday at North Bengal University (NBU), Dr BC Paul from the university told PTI on Saturday.
The year 2009 was declared as the Year of Astronomy by the United Nations in its 62nd General Assembly to mark the invention of telescope by Galileo in the year 1609.
Urging the new generation of students to take up science as a subject, eminent astrophysicist Prof Dipankar Bhattacharjee rued that the present trend of taking up job- oriented courses has restricted many talented students to go for science.
To generate interest in science among the students, the IUCAA has scheduled to organise a two-day workshop on May 29 and May 30, where students of class X to class XII from 23 schools of north Bengal would participate.
