Cement unit officials bow to workers? demands

A CEMENT factory management agreed to increase workers? wages to Rs 104 per day and pay overtime for duty beyond eight hours. The announcement was made after over 500 workers and farmers staged a dharna in front of the factory at Sadwan village on Wednesday. They protested against the failure to pay wages on time. They also demanded steps to check air pollution and discharge of effluents by the factory. All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha activists led the farmers and the workers.

The announcement was made after over 500 workers and farmers staged a dharna in front of the factory at Sadwan village on Wednesday.

They protested against the failure to pay wages on time. They also demanded steps to check air pollution and discharge of effluents by the factory.

All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha (AIKMS) activists led the farmers and the workers.

Mazdoor Sabha joint secretary VP Patel said the workers staged the protest even as two truckloads of PAC personnel, policemen from Ghoorpur, Bara and Kaundhiara kept vigil.

The workers were addressed by AIKMS leaders Heeralal, Ram Kailash, Dhanpatti Devi, Rekha Devi, Raj Kumar, Ram Sawaroop and others.

Around noon, Kaundhiara circle officer Pradyuman Singh and the Bara tehsildar came to the factory. Factory managers Rakesh Shukla and AN Jha spoke to the leaders in their presence.

With regard to compensation for pollution, the management said it would work out the details with their higher-ups and discuss the matter with Bara officials on July 4.

The workers called off their dharna afterwards.
