Official sources said the team members toured the district in separate groups and interacted with people.

While one group, under the leadership of A Purkayastha, Joint Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, visited the flood-hit areas of Samastipur and Muzaffarpur, another group headed by Sudhir Kumar Sah, Director, National Water Resources Department toured East Champaran and Sheohar, sources said.

After landing at Samastipur from Patna, the Central team went to Kalyanpur block and other flood-ravaged areas of Rosera, Hasanpur and Kalyanpur, the sources said quoting a report from Samastipur. Later the team members held a meeting with District Magistrate Narmadeshwar Lal.

The district officials submitted a demand of nearly Rs 500 crore for relief and rehabilitation work, sources said.

From Samastipur, the team left for Muzaffarpur where they visited Meenapur block and other flood-affected areas to access the extent of damage caused by the flood. They also inquired about the relief work currently underway.

Another team visited flood-hit areas of Sheohar and East Champaran districts and interacted with officials and locals.

After the two-day visit of the flood-hit districts, the Central team will hold a meeting with Chief Secretary KAH Subramaniam and other officials on Friday before returning.

During his Bihar visit on July 27, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said that based on the recommendations of the central team, the Centre would provide financial assistance to Bihar for relief and rehabilitation work.
