This is a book that cries out to be read. Not just because it has been written by the most influential management guru of our times, or that it comes about 20 years since In Search of Excellence. It’s because of what it says and the way it says it.
Tom Peters says he’s “madder than hell” that he and others have been shouting and screaming about bankrupt business practices for “25 or 30 years… mostly to no avail”.
What he wants is continuous change, innovation, destruction of old businesses and business practices for others to come in their place. He talks about the end of the corporation as we know it. He wants people who think ‘weird’ should be left alone so that they can grow. Stability is not something to be coveted. Peters also says how women should be made an integral part of new management. And all this, he says, is ‘not optional’.
The shrill tone of the book is presented with colours, pictures, bold coloured type, etc. It ties in with the ‘Technicolor Rules’ that he begins each chapter with since, according to him, these are ‘Technicolor Times’ that demand ‘Technicolor Words and Technicolor Ideas and Technicolor Actions’. This book may not throw up too many suggestions but will perhaps get you madder than hell.`
