Tripathy's posting as IG Prisons came in the wake of continuing protests against the US consulate in Chennai by Muslim groups opposed to a controversial American movie allegedly denigrating Islam.

The Consulate had faced attacks on Friday with protestors pelting stones.

TK Rajendiran has been posted as ADGP (law and order), principal home secretary R Rajagopal said in a press release.

Tripathy will replace SK Dogra, who has been posted as Director, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.

Tripathy was posted as Commissioner of Chennai after the AIADMK government stormed to power in 2011 after the April Assembly elections.
