Lucknowites have got a temporary relief from power blues following the UP Power Corporation's decision to exempt the State capital, along with Noida, from rostering till April 4 in view of the Board exams. Other cities have been exempted from additional power cuts that were enforced in the wake of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's decision to ensure 14 hours of power supply to villages.

Sources in the corporation, however, said that the decision to discontinue additional power cuts in cities would not have any adverse bearing on the 14-hour power supply to villages, which would continue to receive electricity for the stipulated period. “The shortage is being compensated by cutting down power supply to industries. For instance on Thursday, power supply to industries was discontinued from 11 am to 5 pm,” said an official.

Besides, we have also kept the option open to purchase additional power from the central pool at a high cost to meet any exigency or unforeseen shortfall in demand, he said.

There would be no power cuts from 7 am till 5 pm in other cities as well in the wake of Board Exams, said corporation officials. According to sources, the corporation was presently spending between Rs 5 to 7 crore alone in purchasing 250 megawatt of power at Rs 7 per unit from the central pool to meet the shortfall.
