Classy glass: Stained to perfection
I love challenges and nothing was more challenging than heading for Delhi where I had to start from the scratch, says Sonia Gulati.
The next time you walk in at Diva at the 3C’s complex, look at the stained glass work carefully. The woman behind those beautiful stained glass panels has also some of her work at the bar and coffee shop at Tivoli Gardens and also the coffee shop at Hotel Radisson, Jallandhar. And the latest in Sonia Gulati Sarin’s kitty is a porch table with matching chairs in mosaic for Shiamak Davar.
A student of New York School of Visual Arts, where she specialised in stained glass, Sarin moved to Delhi from Kolkata in 1996. And she hasn’t regretted her decision. “I love challenges and nothing was more challenging than to head for Delhi where I knew no one and had to start from the scratch,” says Sarin.
Born in Meerut and brought up in Kolkata and New York, Sarin has handled both commercial and residential projects that involved stained glass panels, domes, and reproduction of Tiffany lamps.
What sets her work apart from others is her fusion on glass, acid washing and air brushing on glass, fibre glass sculptures, Mughal painting on glass, terracotta and mosaic art. Sarin, who loves travelling, has also been to Bally to learn pottery. She was there for two and a half months to learn the art from locals. “I love travelling and exploring different places and the mediums that can be used to make my work interesting and unique,” admits Sarin.
