MUNICIPAL COMMISSIONER Badal Chatterjee has now himself taken upon the responsibility to supervise the quintessential work of cleaning of drains before the onset of monsoon.
Presiding over a meeting here on Friday, Chatterjee issued instructions for proper and timely cleaning of drains in the city before the onset of monsoon.
The Engineering department of Kanpur Municipal Corporation has the responsibility of cleaning 127 drains, while the Health department has the responsibility of de-silting 309 drains in the city.
Expressing concern over the slow progress of work, the municipal commissioner issued stern warning to all officials to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe.
He also gave orders for the cleaning of silt along with de-silting of drains in order to prevent the silt from slipping into the drain again.
In order to expedite the work, Chatterjee gave orders for the construction of additional handcarts for safai karamcharies. It may be pointed out that against the requirement of 4000 handcarts there are only 800 available at KMC at present. This paucity of handcarts has also proved to be a major hurdle in the disposal of silt.
“In order to ensure the speedy disposal of silt, I have issued instructions for procurement of handcarts,” stated Chatterjee. Another major hurdle is acute shortage of safai karamcharies. At present KMC has 3300 safai karamcharies while 4000 more are required for carrying out proper cleaning of drains.
Senior KMC officials present in the meeting apprised the municipal commissioner about the problem and pointed out that this shortage was a major hurdle in timely completion of cleaning of drains in the city before the onset of monsoon.
However, the municipal commissioner requested the officials to bear with the crisis in the larger interest of the city.
It may be pointed out that district magistrate Anurag Srivastav had already expressed concern over the improper cleaning of drains by the Health department of KMC. The DM had explicitly warned the KMC officials to ensure proper cleaning of drains before monsoon.
