"You never get a second chance," said the subject line of the email I received on Sunday. I opened to find a stunning picture of an iPhone 4S - being offered to me for Rs. 399 only. It looked exactly like the kind of shopping offers I get from websites such as Snapdeal, Rediff or eBay. But I took a good look, and found there was no known e-commerce site mentioned, and avoided clicking the link.

Whatever it be, I suddenly realised that not everyone will be as careful as I was.

Sunday's significantly masked e-commerce mail came a day ahead of an expected attack on Monday of the DNSChanger malware, which mimicks whole websites to seriously infect computers. It's estimated to affect 300,000 worldwide.

For us non-geek users, precaution and caution are the bywords in such a world - with not clicking a suspicious link or file as the basic rule.

But beyond that, I do think cloud computing - the business of using software or storage on the Internet rather than the ones stored in your laptop or desktop PC - makes more sense. While one school of thought on cyber security speaks of keeping confidential files backed up on your own personal storage such as an external hard drive, there is an equal case for cloud-based storage of files, because the service provider can sweep and scan the files, protect it from attacks and keep back-ups for you.

This is analogous to comparing a locker in your bedroom almirah with a safety locker in a bank that you pay a service charge for. As we all know, expensive jewellery is often kept in a bank locker. But of course, like you save your bank locker keys, you must guard your password.
