One of the two coal-blocks under the CBI scanner was allocated to a private firm for utilisation in its sponge-iron production project in 2006, said a CBI source. The coal block was to be shared with a few more private firms as per the terms of the inter-ministerial screening committee’s recommendation.

“The firm was not eligible but resorted to misrepresentation of facts related to the eligibility criteria to bag the coal block,” said a CBI source.

The CBI is likely to book two other private firms that were jointly allocated the Jharkhand coal block in 2008. The coal block was to be utilised for non-power end-use by the recipients, according to the source.
