“Comrade Azad is safe. The information that he was under illegal detention was incorrect. He was supposed to meet Comrade Shakamuri Apparao alias Ravi somewhere in Maharashtra. After learning the news of his (Apparao’s) martyrdom, Azad didn’t go there. (As) he could not give feedback to the comrades concerned why he didn’t reach, there was this confusion. It’s natural to get suspicious in the present conditions that Azad was under illegal custody,” the statement said.

On Saturday, the Maoists threatened revenge if the security forces harmed Azad in any way. Azad’s mother on Saturday moved the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission, complaining that there was a threat to her son’s life.
