The Congress on Friday charged the BJP with trying to communally surcharge the atmosphere in the politically sensitive UP. This was reflected in its decision to send Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for electioneering there, the party said.

Reacting to the BJP's plans to draft its pro-Hindutva leaders such as Modi and Uma Bharti in the state, a senior Congress leader termed it as a panic reaction on the BJP leadership's part to save their sinking ship.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal said the BJP leaders led by A.B. Vajpayee were spreading falsehood regarding the NDA Government's achievements and the Congress' contribution in nation building during the last five decades.
