The Congress hit back at the CPM for accusing the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of pushing the country into a “political crisis'” by alleging that the Left’s argument against the nuclear deal are “absurd” and “irrational.”

On a day when RJD’s Lalu Yadav met Congress president Sonia Gandhi to break the impasse on the nuclear issue, the party rushed to the PM’s defence, linking the deal with the country’s energy requirement in the face of rising global crude prices. Lalu is reportedly among those working on the SP to back the Congress if it needs support should the Left withdraw support on the issue.

“The Left’s objections are ideological rather than rational and it has fallen back on absurd arguments. Blocking the deal could jeopardise India’s energy security,” said AICC’s Veerappa Moily in a seven-page statement.
