The police in a late evening press statement said a case under section 294 of the RPC was registered and the cop was immediately suspended.

Two civilians were injured after residents from the Muran Chowk area of Pulwama protested against the 'molestation attempt' by the cop.

Sources said clashes took place as soon as the word about the incident spread. Locals resorted to stone pelting against police and paramilitary forces.

Locals alleged that some policemen tried to kidnap the girl in a police gypsy. Cops were chased away by locals when the girl raised an alarm.

"Today at about 3:30 pm, a girl alleged that a police constable misbehaved with her in Pulwama. Taking advantage of situation, some miscreants started stone pelting as a result of which the situation got deteriorated. Pulwama district police swung into action and brought under control,'' said a police spokesman.

Sources said a patrol party of 55 RR that was passing through the area at that time fired warning shots to disperse the angry protesters.
