Cops cane-charge BJP men

Clash over burning of effigy, Three activists badly beaten up

SEVERAL BJP activists including former deputy mayor Ratan Singh sustained injuries when police resorted to lathicharge to disperse them on Friday. The activists were burning an effigy of the SP government in Kabirchaura area.

Policemen beat up three activists severely in the clash. The injured, detained by cops for nearly two hours in Kotwali police station, were released.

Irate BJP activists had organised a series of demonstrations in the city in protest against the alleged misrule of SP government.

The former deputy mayor of Varanasi Sanjay Rai along with his supporters reached the Sigra crossing and burnt the effigy. Soon, cops patrolling in the area, nabbed around 30 activists, who were later released.

Senior BJP leaders like Shyam Deo Roy Choudhry (MLA), Ajai Rai (MLA), Jyotsana Srivastava, former BJP MLA, Harshpal Kapoor, Ashok Dhawan, Navratan Rathi and Ravi Shanker Singh were sitting on dharna at the Kotwali police station, seeking action against those cops, who beat up the activists in the afternoon.

Lashing out against the administration, BJP MLA Ajai Rai said cops had beaten up BJP activists who were staging a demonstration at Kabirchaura in a peaceful manner. He said the administration was not initiating any action against those SP activists who created trouble in Chetganj area during civic election polling recently. “We would continue our stir till action is taken against them by the local administration”, he added .

The station officer of kotwali MP Tiwari said one of the BJP activists Jai Nath Mishra had taken out his licensed pistol when cops snatched the effigy from the activists at Kabirchaura area. His pistol has been seized.

Meanwhile, two police sub-inspectors, including the one attached to the police lines, have been placed under suspension in connection with lathicharge on BJP activists on Friday. The ADM (City) has constituted an inquiry into the matter.
