Cops, it appears, are now determined to botch up the sensational Sant Gyaneshwar murder case in which eight persons were riddled with bullets near Handia last month.

What has caused suspicion among a section of cops against their own colleagues over their sincerity in working out this case is the reported withdrawal of the STF from the mainstream of this case.
This means, ''political godfathers have jumped into the bandwagon to hijack this case and let it die its own death'', said a cop on condition of anonymity. They have their own argument in support of their suspicion.
The main accused Monu Singh is the younger brother of Chandra Bhadra Singh who is a ruling party MLA in the State, they point out. And that is why cops have deliberately slowed their steps. Had it not been so Monu Singh who had escaped the so-called police dragnet after the murders would not have managed to win the block pramukh's election from Sultanpur and that too unopposed.
Sant Gyaneshwar was Monu Singh's sworn enemy as, according to police files, the sant was involved in the murder of Indra Bhadra Singh, father of Monu Singh.
The murder of the sant and his seven followers was a sequel to this killing.
All this despite the fact that only one shooter Akhilesh Singh hailing from Azamgarh was nabbed by the police while another shooter Dabboo Singh, also hailing from Azamgarh, as claimed by the cops, was shot dead in an encounter.
It may be mentioned that Monu Singh's direct involvement came into light after the confession made by him to the police after the arrest. Akhilesh told the police that Monu Singh was present on the scene of crime. It may also be mentioned that much before the arrest of Akhilesh and his confession HT Live had come out with a story about Monu Singh's involvement and his presence on the crime scene.
And now some more beans have been spilled. Police sources now say, Monu had also fired from a pistol at the sant at the same time when the assassins hired by him were spraying bullets from their weapons.
On the other hand cops are sleeping over the fact that shooters from Jaunpur, Sultanpur and Pratapgarh were also involved in this mass killing which had rocked the residents of this city. It was on February 10 when the sant's convoy of vehicles after leaving the Magh Mela area came under a well orchestrated attack near Handia by a gang of sharp shooters and professional killers who were following the former in three vehicles. The attack with automatic weapons including AK 47 left eight persons dead.
