Four of the 12 injured have fractures. The workers claimed the jawans chased them down for about two kilometres before thrashing them.

The jawans also thrashed a local TV journalist and snatched his camera before setting him free. The matter has been reported to Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and DGP Ranjiv Singh Dalal.

However, the police denied having launched a lathicharge against the workers and claimed they were injured during a clash with truck union activists.

“The striking workers were trying to disrupt movement of trucks loaded with automobile components. A clash ensued between them and the truck union. Our jawans only tried to separate them,” said DCP (south) Pala Ram.

Over a 1,000 workers of two automobile component manufacturers —Sunbeam Casting and RIICO Industries — are agitating for the reinstatement of their suspended colleagues.
