The training course has been sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi and is being attended by participants from various disciplines of social sciences from Allahabad, Varanasi, Aligarh, Khatima (Uttaranchal), Gorakhpur, Kanpur and New Delhi among other places.

Speaking on the occasion, Jaya Arunachalam reiterated the need and importance of computers for enhancement of skills and for all-round development. Recalling her experience of working with economically weak women having poor literacy skills, she elaborated how the use of computers have brought about a significant change in their socio-economic life.

She expressed confidence in computers as a very strong and viable medium of change and hoped that this training would help the participants to realise their true potential and help them to serve the humanity in a better way.

Earlier, welcoming the participants, Dr SK Pant, one of the course coordinators, spelt out the objectives of the programme and also cautioned the participants about its limitation.

According to him, computers were only the means and not an end in itself and, thus, have to be used quite judiciously. Accepting the importance of computer Prof RC Tripathi, GBPSSI Director reiterated the need for being rationally accepting whatever the computer brings out. Recalling his days as a researcher, Prof Tripathi said that now the use of computer has enhanced quite significantly but so have our responsibilities. The need of the hour, therefore, is to use the computers rationally to enhance our understanding of the society and help in promoting social welfare, he added. Anjesh Kumar, proposed the vote of thanks.

In the first technical session on 'Computer and its application in social sciences', Anjesh Kumar dwelt, in detail, how computers have facilitated the understanding of complex subjects of social sciences. According to him, research in social sciences is far more difficult as compared to physical sciences, because it is very difficult to control the factors that operate in uncontrolled environment. Dr SK Pant reviewed the use of various statistical methods in social sciences.
