Crime: Cops find themselves helpless

Cops appear to have become powerless in dealing with even heinous crimes like murders and land grabbing in the city. The recent daylight murder of a railway contractor Nanhe Khan in the heart of the city on Thornhill Road, grabbing of land belonging to Baghambari Gaddi Trust and gun battle in Muthiganj between two warring gangs are latest examples of cops' inability to take stern action against the culprits due to high political connections.

Everybody knows the hand behind the murder of Nanhe Khan who had started work on a Rs 2 crore worth contract. Despite the named FIR no action against the perpetrators of crime has been taken allegedly because one of the culprits is a cousin of SP MP Ateeq Ahmad who had been demanding around Rs 15 lakh as his cut in the contract. Some cops on condition of anonymity say Hamza, the cousin, had demanded Rs 28 lakh. They even went to the extent of accusing the hand of Ateeq's brother and SP MLA from City West Ashraf who, according to them, had left the scene of murder in a vehicle ten minutes before the incident.

IG Railways RN Singh may have been suspended by the Government for having broken service rules by sitting on a dharna at the Bade Hanuman Temple in the Sangam area against the Mahant of the trust Narendra Giri but cops say he had staged the protest for a just cause. According to a police officer the IG and the Mahant were good friends till recently when their relations soured. The IG was reportedly against the alleged grabbing of some trust land by Vijay Misra, SP MLA from Bhadohi, who spends all his time in the city allegedly grabbing prime property. The Mahant, according to cops, had joined hands with the MLA.

The half an hour gun battle between Pappu Ganjia and Lala Mahara in Muthiganj a few days ago is still fresh in the mind of residents of the area. Pappu Ganjia, a history-sheeter is said to be close to Ateeq Ahmad.
