Police resorted to mild power to disperse supporters of Meraj demonstrating outside the collectorate. They were shouting slogans against the administration. It may be noted Meraj, having links with jailed independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari and absconding don Munna Bajrangi, had been arrested by the police in Rae Bareli following recovery of illegal firearms from his car. A few days ago, he was granted bail.
Acting on a tip-off, police surrounded Meraj when he was going to board his vehicle outside his house. During checking a packet of brown sugar was found.
Cops took him to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya government hospital and got him examined. Later, he was taken to the NDPS court from where, he was remanded to judicial custody.
SP (City), Anant Deo said Meraj was a criminal and involved in illegal activities. He had been supplying illegal firearms to members of several gangs of the Purvanchal.
Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) sources said recovery of brown sugar from anyone with more than quantity of 250 grams, was a non-bailable offence.
At present, Meraj is associated with ruling party. Earlier, he enjoyed the patronage of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
