Although 2011’s cruise ships lack the star power of Royal Caribbean’s gigantic Oasis-class cruise ships launched in 2010 and 2009, the year will see the launch of several rather more nimble ships. Look out for the long-awaited Disney Dream, the Carnival Magic and the Costa Favolosa, which are likely to be making the biggest waves of them all.
Jan 26 (maiden voyage)
Weighing in at 128,000 tons, the Disney Dream will cross Atlantic to Florida. It will be the new flagship of the Disney fleet and offers entertainment for both young and old passengers. Innovations include the water coaster Aquaduck and high-end French restaurant Remy.
May 1 (official debut)
The 3,690-passenger vessel returns to Europe and will make a round trip from Barcelona, Spain.
It is the latest “fun ship” from Carnival Cruises, boasting the WaterWorks aqua park, an on-board pub with its own home-brews and the first ropes course at sea, featuring an above-deck net offering dizzying views of the water 45m below.
July 4 (maiden voyage)
The Costa Favolosa is made in Italy and will carry 3,000 passengers and weighs in at 114,500 tons. She features a 4D cinema, a 23,000 square foot spa, a Grand Prix driving simulator and a poolside cinema screen.
July 23 (maiden voyage)
Crossing Hamburg to Rome, the ship will be the first to offer a grill-your-own-dinner facility to its customers, at the ship’s on-deck Lawn Club Grill restaurant. Also, there’s a high-tech hideaway for guests and the line’s famous Celebrity iLounge, an Apple retail outlet at sea.
June 20 (official debut)
The ship weighs in at 32,000 tons, will sail from Barcelona, Spain and will carry 450 passengers, continuing Seabourn’s tradition of opting for smaller, more intimate ships. She offers an 11,400 square foot indoor/outdoor spa, four restaurants, six bars and several open terraces.
