Four police personnel were suspended and a murder case registered against them in connection with the custodial death of a man, arrested on charges of abduction and rape, police said.

The murder case was registered on Monday following a complaint of the victim's father. A gram pradhan and another person have also been named in the case, they said.

"Haldi police station in-charge and three constables were suspended and a DSP rank official has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the case," SP Lalji Shukla said.

On March 21, Mohd Umar alias Badkau, arrested on charges of abducting and raping a girl, had allegedly attempted suicide by hanging himself inside the lockup at Haldi police station. He was rushed to a hospital after an inmate raised an alarm, but he died during treatment, police had said.

However, his family members alleged that severe beating led to his death.
