The new statue costing around Rs 1.5 lakh was on its way from Lucknow, said District Magistrate Amrit Abhijat adding that the statue would be replaced in the morning.
Talking to media persons he said, the damage to the statue was carried out by those who wanted to create law and order problem on the campus and also to vitiate the atmosphere of the city under a well thought out strategy as the incident coincided with the death anniversary of Ambedkar which was being observed all over the country.
He said the replacement of the statue would be carried out with full honour to the man who is considered Father of the Indian Constitution. He said, a private security guard Bharat Lal, who had been arrested, was being questioned over the role of those who carried out the shameful act to create lawlessness. He said steps were being initiated to prevent re-occurrence of such incidents as Ambedkar’s statue could be found in many villages in the rural areas too. He said, help from lekhpals, civil defence and police personnel would be taken to prevent any repeat of the incident which shattered peace in the city today.
He said, two or three persons, besides the guard, had also been identified and would be questioned to get to the bottom of the incident. The DM also thanked the university authorities and the VC for promptly agreeing to replace the damaged statue. The expenses incurred on the statue would be met by the AU, he said.
Meanwhile, SSP BD Paulson, who was present with the DM, said it appeared to be the handiwork of some inmates of a nearby hostel. The security guard he said could not escape his responsibility. All those found involved in the incident would not be spared, he said.
