Buckling under tremendous pressure mounted by the students leaders, vice-chancellor Prof Arun Kumar convened a meeting of the district officials to discuss the possible date for the election and availability of police force. Later in the evening, he announced that the students union election would be held on December 12.
It is notable that differences cropped up between the academic council and the working committee members over determination of age for the election.
The academic council had sent a proposal to working committee members suggesting that the age should be counted from the date of the nomination paper, but the working committee did not agree and sent back the proposal to the academic council for reconsideration.
As the meeting started, students’ leaders gathered at the venue and shouted slogans against university officials. However, after hectic discussion and confusion over the determination of age issue, the academic council decided that the age of students leaders would be counted at the time of admission.
Trouble started when some students tried to break the police cordon. Students indulged in scuffle with the police officials deployed at the venue of the meeting to avoid any untoward incident.
When V-C Prof Arun Kumar, who was chairing the meeting, came out from the meeting hall, students’ leaders gheraoed him and demanded official announcement on the decision of the academic council. However, Prof Kumar declined to make any statement and went to his office.
Later, agitated students gheraoed the university officials at the administrative block and shouted slogans against the decision of the academic council to determined the age from date of admission. They pelted stones and damaged officials’ vehicles parked in the administrative building. Half a dozen employees and teachers received injuries in the incident and police resorted lathicharge to disperse the agitated students.
